NZDF launch the Construction Health, Environment and Safety Specification (CHESS)
December 10 2020
NZDF are poised to significantly increase the amount of NZDF Estate construction projects to deliver the $4.5 billion regeneration and maintenance of the Defence Estate. To help keep our people safe on the estate during this busy construction period, NZDF have launched the Construction Health, Environment and Safety Specification (CHESS) system.
CHESS is a very comprehensive system that will inevitably bring positive change to the way that main and sub-contractors meet their health and safety obligations, associated with work undertaken for NZDF. Starting with key NZDF and DEI policy, CHESS sets out the minimum health and safety specifications for our construction contractors. CHESS also provide mechanisms for DEI to measure contractor health and safety performance on projects. CHESS will apply to all contractors, sub-contractors and facilities management contractors at NZDF camps and bases.
SiteSafe, the construction industry representative body, view CHESS as having the potential to become a construction industry standard. They have committed to create 20 health and safety construction qualification scholarships in support of CHESS. There is also a lot of interest in adopting CHESS from other public sector organisations.
